Comtec racing had it first win of the season last weekend at Portimao.
Jon Lancaster took his maiden win of the WSR3.5 series at the new Algarve circuit in the first race.
After a difficult weekend for the team having had two engine failures due to either the heat or bad fuel Jon qualified 4th in his group giving him pole for the first race due to the reverse grid.
His team mate Alberto Valerio failed to qualify in the top eight because of an engine problem allowing him to use only one of his new sets of tyres. This was disappointing for the GP2 driver, using the weekend to familiarise himself with the track for his GP2 race in September, as his first run on new tyres had put him in 3rd place which would have been good enough for a top eight start in both races.
Jon Lancaster led the first race from pole to chequered flag holding championship leader Bertrand Baguette in an epic battle. Baguette seemed to have a quicker car but Lancaster’s racecraft was good enough to hold off the Belgian .
In race two Lancaster started from 8th place but struggled with the car finally making a mistake trying to outbrake Fairuz Fauzy, spun and was collected by SG Formulas Anton Nebylitskiy.
Valerio was sensible after his poor qualifying and used the races as an extended test putting in some very impressive times but finishing way down the field.
Team manager John Barnett commented “After very little time in the car Jon has impressed us all and it was only a matter of time before he would get a win. We could see his potential in Hungary and from his impressive pole position at Le Mans two weeks previously. I would also like to thank Alberto for his support and professionalism, his sheer pace surprised us all in a car he had not driven before this weekend.
